Partially enclosed by a wall of columnar dark yews (backed by mirrors!), this garden does indeed create the desire to see more. On select evenings, Bar Car Nights will offer after-dark viewing of the exhibition for adults 21 and over, along with food, specialty cocktails, live entertainment, and more. The food concessions will be from the Bronx Night Market vendors, the city’s newest food market, which was just featured in The New York Times.

Central Park is the star of this year's Holiday Train Show at The New York Botanical Garden. Exhibits include the latest in new technologies from home builders and developers, remodeling and home improvement contractors and building material suppliers. They flew about the islands’ lofty peaks on backs of cranes, and the islands themselves were carried on the backs of giant sea turtles. This garden has been created through the combined efforts of ten Conservation Districts and their “Better Ground” initiative. Representatives of this coalition will provide additional “how-to” information at their booth at the show. Whether you’re home or abroad, the concept behind this garden is that everyone deserves a sanctuary. Though the backdrop is one of futuristic decay, this is a place of regrowth and regeneration.

Instead of being decorously tucked away among the flora of the Conservatory, the individual buildings and sites have a lot more space to shine. They’re easier to see as well, and the lighting seems a little brighter and maybe more dramatic. Instead of a tropical backdrop of plants, the structures now have a backdrop of winter shrubs and other plantings, which seems more in keeping with the season. There are now long sight lines that allow visitors to watch the model trains run the full length of their tracks and back. There’s also a wall of windows that allow the panorama of NYBG’s pines and fir trees to be seen. When the snow finally comes and covers those trees, it promises to be even more magical.

"Asian Sensibilities, Northwest Style"

Zipping along past the landmarks are model trains of different gauges, from steam engines to 19th century streetcars, freight trains and passenger trains. They travel on overhead trestles, race through dense plantings, cross countless bridges and generally add a welcome sense of movement. Toss in some glittering lights and it’s little wonder that this has long been a crowd-pleaser. This year’s exhibit, which debuted on November 23, showcases Central Park and runs through Sunday, January 26, 2020.

It’s normally set up amid the tropical plantings inside the venerable Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. But the Conservatory is undergoing a major restoration, so it’s been moved to a vast, climate-controlled exhibition space located on the Conservatory Lawn next to the Conservatory. You’ll find ideas ranging from creating pollinator friendly habitat to developing smart rain water management using rain barrels and rain gardens. There are elements applicable to home and garden, farm and wooded properties - highlighting approachable conservation efforts in each setting. You’ll be transported into the lands of castles, wild coastlines and legendary poets in this visual journey. Your eyes are drawn to a large stone portal revealing fields of heather and thyme dotted with stone.
